Cultural Criminology

This advanced seminar course involve an examination of crime and deviance within a cultural context. Students analyze the meanings inherent in common social constructions of delinquency, violent offenders, causes of crime, and victimization in popular culture. These cultural meanings or narratives are explored in film, literature, music, news, and television. Focus is also placed on the discussion of how cultural endeavors may be labeled as deviant and regulated or, alternatively, how popular culture may serve as an avenue of subversive dialogue for deviant subcultures.
